Find web design clients: local business leads for web designers

How do web designers find clients?

Pick a local niche that lives on enquiries, list the businesses in that niche and city, then audit each one’s website for gaps you can fix — no HTTPS, no mobile layout, no tap-to-call, no contact form. LeadQuasar holds 102,156 local business listings with Google ratings and review counts, and its free lead score tool runs the audit.

The list tells you who exists. The audit tells you who has a problem worth pitching. Browsing needs no account; a free account unlocks 50 leads a day.

Step by step

How to find web design clients with LeadQuasar

Five steps from “I sell websites” to a pitch that names a real problem on the prospect’s own site.

  1. 1

Pick a niche that lives on local enquiries

Dentists, law firms, plumbers, chiropractors: businesses where a phone call or a form fill is the sale. Use the niche table above to check there are enough of them in the places you work.

  2. 2

List the businesses in that niche and city

Open the Companies tab in Find Leads and filter by category and state. Each listing shows its Google rating and review count. Searching is free and needs no account.

  3. 3

    Audit each prospect’s homepage

Paste their website into the free lead score tool. It checks HTTPS, a mobile viewport, tap-to-call, a contact form or email link, a call to action, page title, meta description and social links — and lists what is missing. Ten a day, no account.

  4. 4

Go deeper on the best prospects

Run the ones worth a proposal through the Business Growth Analyzer: up to six pages read, fifteen checks, and a comparison with the business’s local market. Three reports a day, no account.

  5. 5

Unlock the contact and pitch the gap

A free account unlocks 50 leads a day; Pro is $3.99/month for unlimited unlocks and CSV export. Lead with the specific problem you found — “your site has no tap-to-call link on mobile” beats “I build websites”.

Qualify before you pitch

What makes a local business a good web design prospect?

A reason to talk to you. Each gap the audit can find costs the business something specific, and each one maps to work you can sell.

What the audit findsWhat it costs themWhat you can pitch
No HTTPSBrowsers label the site “Not secure”, which costs trust and search ranking.Hosting move or SSL setup — a small, easy first job.
No mobile viewportThe site renders desktop-width on a phone, where most local searches happen.A responsive rebuild — the strongest reason to redesign.
No tap-to-call linkA visitor on a phone has to copy the number by hand to ring.Click-to-call buttons and a sticky mobile header.
No contact form or email linkThere is no way to get in touch in writing without leaving the site.An enquiry form wired to their inbox or CRM.
No clear call to actionThe page describes the business but never asks for the enquiry.A conversion-focused homepage: quote, booking or call buttons.
Missing page title or meta descriptionGoogle writes its own snippet, or shows a weak title in results.Local SEO basics bundled into the build.
No social profiles linkedNothing on the site corroborates that the business is active.A minor add-on — useful supporting detail, rarely the lead pitch.
Honest limits

What LeadQuasar can’t do for web designers

  • It won't find businesses without a website.

We don’t flag them, and there are few to flag: 102,117 of 102,156 listings have a website on record and 39 do not. If first-ever websites are your whole offer, look elsewhere.

  • Local listings are the smaller part of the database.

102,156 local business listings sit alongside a much larger B2B contact database (7.5M+ records in total). Contact records are people with job titles and carry no Google ratings or reviews.

  • Coverage is concentrated in big cities.

79.7% of listings are in 20 large cities, and 8,828 have no usable city or state. A small town may return few listings or none.

  • Listings have no email addresses.

Local business listings carry a phone number and a website, not an email. Plan to call, or to find the address on their site.

  • Ratings and reviews are a snapshot.

They were collected in July 2026. Check the live Google listing before quoting a rating back to a prospect.

  • The audit reads code, not taste.

The lead score tool checks the homepage for eight concrete things. It does not judge design quality, copy or page speed — you still need to look at the site.

Finding web design clients — questions

How do web designers find clients?

A repeatable way is to choose a niche, build a list of local businesses in it, and approach the ones whose current website has a problem you can name. Referrals and local networking still matter, but a specific, visible gap — no mobile layout, no way to call from a phone, no contact form — gives a cold message a reason to exist. LeadQuasar covers both halves: 102,156 local business listings across 54 categories to build the list, and a free homepage audit to find the gap.

Does LeadQuasar list businesses that don't have a website?

No — we don't flag them, and there are very few in the data. 102,117 of our 102,156 local business listings have a website on record and 39 do not, so if you sell first-ever websites to businesses with none, this is the wrong dataset. It is built for the other job: finding businesses whose existing site has gaps worth fixing.

How can I tell if a local business's website needs work?

Run its homepage through the free lead score tool. It checks eight things — HTTPS, a mobile viewport, a tap-to-call link, a contact form or email link, a clear call to action, a page title, a meta description and linked social profiles — and lists what is missing, weighted by what each gap costs the business. Ten checks a day are free with no account. The headline score also counts how many contacts we hold at that domain, so for a small local business read the checklist rather than the total. For a deeper read, the Business Growth Analyzer checks up to six pages against fifteen points, three reports a day with no account.

Which niches are good for selling web design?

Service businesses that win work from local search and phone calls, where a site that fails on a phone loses enquiries — dentists, law firms, plumbers, chiropractors, real estate agents and similar. We can't tell you which will convert best for you, but we can tell you how many exist: in our listings, dentists number 2,420, insurance agencies 2,396 and law firms 2,392.

Is it free to find web design leads on LeadQuasar?

Browsing is free with no account: open the Companies tab in Find Leads and filter by category and state. A free account unlocks 50 leads a day with the contact details shown on screen, and Pro is $3.99/month for unlimited unlocks and CSV export. The lead score tool (ten checks a day) and the Business Growth Analyzer (three reports a day) need no account at all.

Does a low review count mean a business needs a new website?

No. 25,220 of our 102,156 listings (24.6%) have fewer than 10 Google reviews and 6,835 have none, but review count tells you how established a business's Maps listing is, not whether its website works. Use it to decide who to audit first, and let the audit decide who to pitch.
