About Amtrak
Amtrak, formally the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, describes itself as an intercity passenger railroad that Congress created: a federally chartered corporation managed as a for-profit company, with the federal government as its majority stakeholder. It says it began national operations on May 1, 1971, and that its trains reach more than 500 destinations in 46 states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces, mostly over track owned by other railroads. Its service is split into Northeast Corridor, state-supported and long-distance routes.
